Today's ornament was this cute little gingerbread man.
I adapted the pattern from the Frankie Brown gingerbread man. The pattern was for a larger ornament than I wanted (they had to fit into those 3.5" pockets) so I made it smaller. I used size 3 needles and this yarn and the the final ornament was about 2.5" high. Here is my adaptation of the pattern.
The Legs
Cast on 2 sts.
Next row: Kf&b, K1
Next row: Kf&b, K1, P1 (4 sts).
Work 5 rows in moss stitch as follows:
Row 1: K1, P1 repeat to end of row.
Row 2: P1, K1 repeat to end of row
repeat this pattern for 3 more rows
Cut the yarn and push the knitting to the bottom of the needle. On
the same needle cast on 3 sts and work the other leg in the same
way. Do not cut the yarn.
Now join the legs:
Next row: (K1, P1) four times (8sts).
The Body
Work 4 rows in moss stitch as before (starting with a row 2)
The Arms
Next row: Cast on 3 sts at the start of each row and then
kf&b, *P1, K1, repeat from * to end.
Next row: Cast on 3 sts at the start of each row and then
kf&b, *K1, P1, repeat from * to end (16 sts).
Next row: K2tog, *P1, K1, repeat from * to end.
Next row: P2tog, K1, *P1, K1, repeat from * to end (14 sts).
Next row: Slipping the first st knitwise and working in
pattern, cast off 5 sts and then *K1, P1, repeat
from * to end.
Next row: Slipping the first st purlwise and working in pattern,
cast off 5 sts and then P1, K1, P1 (4 sts).
The Head
Next row: Pf&b, K1, P1, K1.
Next row: Kf&b, (P1, K1) twice (6 sts).
Work 4 rows in moss stitch as before:.
Next row: P2tog, (K1, P1) twice.
Next row: K2tog, P1, K1, P1 (4 sts).
Cast off in pattern, slipping the first stitch knitwise.
Sew in the ends and then, using thin black yarn (laceweight or half
a strand of 4 ply), embroider the eyes and mouth. Sew two small buttons down the body as in the picture.
Knit another body and oversew the two pieces together all round the outside..
